Tema Latter-day Saints Join Africa Wide Service Project

Thousands beautify their communities throughout Africa

Twelve year-old Marjorieta Abankwa rose before the sun on Saturday morning to join hundreds of other members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints in Tema, Ghana. Majorieta was one of thousands of Latter-day Saints across Africa giving service to their communities on All Africa Service Day to clean and brighten the environs in which they live.

“It is very early, but I am glad to serve,” said Marjorieta. “From our work we have a cleaner place to walk and that will mean less sickness and more health for everyone.”

Her twin sister said, “I am so much grateful to be here and hope many will join us". Marjorie continued, ”I like to work with my mother and father. I get to see my friends too.”

Just over 300 Church members from Tema Stake (a group of congregations) trimmed weeds and swept walkways/curbsides on Harbor Road from Valco roundabout to Rana Motors Circle.  Almost 400 additional members of Tema Stake de-silted gutters and cleaned the roadside from Texpo Market to Community 18 Junction, along Spintex Road.

The Tema Stake project was one of hundreds of projects across Ghana and Africa. More than 300,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined in community clean-ups or beautification projects on August 19, 2017.

This was the eleventh year of the All Africa Service Project.

Frank Ato Mills, a local Church leader responsible for organizing the projects in Tema said "This project is dear to the heart of our members. The community gets to see our Church members give back to the community where we live... today will be a good day for everyone.”

Members of the Church from Tema met early Saturday morning for safety instructions and prayer before commencing the projects. Tema Stake President Isaac Kwabena Abankwa addressed the many members gathered in Community 4 Park with a hearty thank you and then remarked, “I love you all. Now let’s go to work!”
