ACP Habiba Twumasi Sarpong received the Family Values Award, on behalf of the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service (DOVVSU). The award given by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recognizes the role the DOVVSU plays in protecting against and preventing domestic violence and child abuse.

The Family Values Award has been presented for several years to recognize those who promote and defend the family. This years award ceremony took place at one of the chapels in Accra last Friday.
The Minister of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Honorable Nana Oye Lithur, attended the ceremony representing Ghana’s First Lady, Her Excellency, Lordina Mahama. Mrs. Oye Lithur commended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for its contribution to the country of Ghana and said that, “The family is the basis for happiness and when the family succeeds, we all succeed.”
After viewing a short video on “Home and Family,” which illustrates the position of the LDS Church regarding families, and its practice of having families set aside Monday nights as a family night, Mrs. Oye Lithur said, “I think we should have family night on Mondays for all of Ghana.” She then indicated that she would be talking with other government officials about this.
In addition, Elder LeGrand R. Curtis Jr., leader of the Church in the Africa West Area, commended DOVVSU for their efforts to protect and preserve families. He said that “families are important and it is important that we have good families. It is important that we teach parents to be good parents.”
“All the world is filled with love, when there's love at home,” said Elder Curtis Jr. quoting from a popular hymn often sung by members of the Church.
Other special guests included Honorable Benjamin Ayeh, member of Parliament; Dr. Ezenator Rawlings, candidate for Parliament and daughter of former President Rawlings; representatives of Honorable Mark O. Woyongo, Minister of Interior for Ghana; and Officers of DOVVSU.
The Master of Ceremonies for the event was former Ghana Broadcasting Corporation personality and Media Specialist, Mrs Susan Naa Avele Sekyere.
The program closed with a prayer given by Islam Educationist, Shiek Alhaji Shaibu Arimiyawo.
