First Lady Meets with Church Leaders

Ghana First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo received a group of leaders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on June 15, 2017. Elder Terence M. Vinson, Africa West Area President (the Church’s senior ecclesiastical leader in the area), discussed social needs of common interest and reported on Church humanitarian service in Ghana. 

 

Elder Vinson reported the Church is aware of how vigorously Mrs. Akufo-Addo championed the cause of children in Ghana. He explained the Church works through its humanitarian arm, LDS Charities, to accomplish several initiatives directly benefiting families and children in Ghana.

John Buah, Africa West Area Welfare Manager, presented the First Lady with a report on Humanitarian initiatives funded by the Church in 2017. These projects include Maternal and Newborn Care, Clean Water, Vision Care, Wheelchairs, Immunization and Refugee Response.

Elder Vinson also shared what LDS Charities is doing to benefit local communities, including donating medical equipment to health centers in Ghana, as well as refurbishing and repairing several community health clinics across the country.  

                               

The First Lady expressed gratitude for the humanitarian assistance rendered by the Church. She was keenly aware of the Helping Babies Breathe/Maternal Care programs carried out through LDS Charities.

They discussed opportunities for the Church to partner with Ghana Health Service to assist with the #Save A Child – Save A Mother project, now underway at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in the Ashanti Region.
