Special Students Get Help from LDS Charities

News Release

Students attending Catholic Special Vocational School near Fijai, Ghana, will have the opportunity to learn new skills training thanks to a donation from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The school trains young people with intellectual disabilities, age 16 and older in vocational and life skills. Through a donation of equipment and materials from LDS Charities, students now receive instruction in batik cloth production, leather work, shoe making, beading, and basket construction. A food grinder was also donated for food production ajnd preservation to aid students living at the school.

Speaking during the ceremony to commemorate the donation, Headmistress Georgina said, "We are surprised and happy your Church can help us. Some thought our students didn’t have the ability to learn, but they have been proven wrong. Thank you LDS Charities for your help!”

The school was established in 2010 by The Catholic Diocese of Sekondi-Takoradi and is currently operated by Ghana Education Service. LDS Charities, the humanitarian arm of the Church, was called upon for assistance when funding for vocational needs was limited.

During the presentation ceremony, Vice Chairman of the Board of Education, Nan Kofi Imbeah said “Our focus here is to help students acquire life and vocational skills. The equipment and supplies you have donated is a big boost in helping us accomplish that goal. We cannot imagine this gift because we were not in a position to buy even one tenth what you have given us.”

African tribal traditions state when there is rain during an event, it is endorsed by God. Heavy rains caused power outages which threatened to delay the presentation ceremony. Nana Imbeah commented on the donation by LDS Charities saying, “The rain is telling you, ‘My brother, God has surely blessed what you have done this day.’ We thank you and our students are grateful.”
