    Church Congratulates Togo and Sierra Leone Ahead of Independence Anniversary  

    Mr. Apedo Kossikuma Semenyo, the Togo Ambassador to Ghana has commended the Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints for their contribution towards the development of families around the world.

    “I am aware of the good things you are doing to help mankind and it is our prayer that your efforts keep going well to help you achieve success in all your endeavors”.

       He said this when representatives of the Church, paid a courtesy visit on Friday April 26, to congratulate him ahead of their 59th Independence Anniversary, which will be observed on Saturday April 27, 2019.

      Mr. Annan Simons, Kasoa Stake President, who led the delegation to the embassy, presented a plaque on “The Family: A Proclamation To The World” to the delegation at the embassy.

      “We are here to extend our congratulatory messages to you on your 59th Independence anniversary and also to present a token as a sign of our friendship with you” he said.

      Sierra Leone High Commission 

      The second delegation led by Emelia Ahadjie, Africa West Area Director of Public Affairs, also paid a courtesy visit to Her Excellency Francess Virginia Anderson, the Sierra Leone High Commissioner to Ghana. The visit was to congratulate her ahead of their 58th Independence anniversary.

      Presenting “The Family: A Proclamation to the World”, to the delegation at the High Commission, Mrs. Ahadjie said, “We are presenting this plaque which talks about family. As a Church, family is one of the most important units to us and we would like to share that with you”.

      She further stated that the Church has partnered government and other private institutions in the execution of projects in the health and education sectors.

      Responding, Her Excellency Anderson stated, “The people of Sierra Leone fear God and love peace. I will convey this message to the President during my visit to Sierra Leone”

       Other dignitaries from the Church included Daniel Abeo, Ofankor Stake President, Elder Drew Hamilton and Sister Susan Hamilton, Associate Area Legal Counsel

      The Republic of Togo and Sierra Leone both gained independence from France and Great Britain on April 27, 1960 and 1961 respectively.  As at 2017, the total population for Togo was seven million seven hundred and ninety-eight while the population for Sierra Leone stood at seven million, five hundred and fifty.

      The Church in Togo, was first organized in 1997. Membership currently stands at 4,684 members and 15 meeting houses. The Church has over the years collaborated with Government and International Agencies, including the Ministry of Health and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) on projects such as irrigation, Immunizations, Neonatal resuscitation training, Wheelchair distribution, Measles vaccinations among others.

      In Sierra Leone, total membership stands at 21, 286 with a total number of 69 congregations and eight family history centers.
