Young Missionaries  Light Up Community Through Service

Missionaries and staff of the Accra Ghana Missionary Training Center (MTC) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Monday December 24, 2018 committed three hours of their time to Light Their Community through service. The over one hundred young men and women clad in their yellow helping hand vests were assigned to groups such as Jacob, Ezekiel, Amos, Enos among others. They made their first stop at the Osu Children’s Home where they spent quality time with the children by singing carols. Led by some staff of the MTC, the missionaries also donated assorted items, including chicken, sanitary materials and learning supplies as their way of giving as the Savior gave.

Presenting the items, Rex Allen, President of MTC explained that the donation was in line with the Church’s Light The World Christmas campaign which seeks to encourage people to serve others during the festive season.

Madam Christiana Addo, Manager of the Osu Children’s Home, lauded the effort of the Missionaries. She said their gesture would be of great support to the Home. She appealed to other organisations and individuals to show their support to children.

Elder Zagadu Dagbame Frank, a Missionary from Cote d’Ivoire who was once an orphan, stated that his experience with the children at the Home was a touching one. He said the visit brought back memories of how difficult life was for him when he was in the same state as these children. “I have felt their pain before but now I am old and have moved on, it was a great privilege to spend time with them”.

After spending almost an hour at the Home, the Light Your Community service train made its second stop at the Osu Cemetery where the committed young men and women delightedly swept, picked poly bags and uprooted unwanted weeds around tombs.

Alfred Odopey, a senior staff at the Osu Cemetery said that throughout his working years at the cemetery, no religious organisation had ever supported them with a service project. He expressed delight at the level of work done by the missionaries. He further expressed his profound gratitude to the gallant young men and women of the Church.
