Prior to construction of the new facility, those living in the dormitory used buckets to bathe each day. The concrete shower facility, complete with 85 shower heads, has replaced the bucket system.
The donation from the Church was noted during a celebratory event held at the school on Nov. 18. The celebration marked the 80th Anniversary of Abuakwa State College. Recognition was given to the Church and other organizations providing improvements and upgrades for the school.
Elder Daniel Yirenya-Tawiah, Quorum of the Seventy (ecclesiastical leader) in the Africa West Area, accepted the commendation from Abuakwa State College on behalf of the Church. “A trained mind opens many opportunities both spiritually and professionally,” he said. “As a church we are pleased to support the education and development of young people. We encourage you to become self-reliant in all you do.”
Special guest of honor at the event was His Excellency, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, President of the Republic of Ghana. President Akufo-Addo thanked the Church and other donors for the contributions made at his Alma Mater.
The President reminded students of the importance of honoring their parents. “You have been brought here by your parents or guardians to be trained to become useful, dignified and responsible citizens in this country,” he said. “Do not disappoint them, study hard, and refrain from anything that can hinder your prospects for a bright future. Remember self-discipline and effective use of your time are key to your success.”
The President also noted the government recognized that a well-trained, confident and contented teacher was at the heart of the delivery of quality education.
Founded in 1937, Abuakwa State College (ABUSCO) has grown from a few students housed in private dwellings and attending classes in a vacated building, to a thriving campus with 2,336 students.
